Born in Paris, Charles Sorel, sieur de Souvigny demonstrated a critical and perspicacious sense of judgment in his Bibliothèque française (1664) and, above all, an astonishingly realistic style in his picaresque novel, La Vraye Histoire comique de Fran-cion (1623), comprising a dozen books, with colorful and comic scenes of society during the reign of louis x III. Such scenes are found also in his parody novel, Le Berger extravagant (1627).
